The Penny Catechism; Who Made You?

 1. Who Made You    God Made Me,

The above was my introduction to the Catholic Faith.  Although I had said a few prayers at home, here I was in a Catholic School beginning my instructions on Theology.   My Parents believed, my teachers believed, so I as a five year old accepted that it was true.   I was later to find that some parents who did not believe in God, did not speak of God, and said no prayers to God were to call this 'indoctrination', though at 82 I am still trying to work out why.   Surely not speaking of God nor praying to God, is a positive denial of his existence, and therefore just as deserving  to be called indoctrination.    "Yes, but you are taught to talk to someone who is not there".   Who says so?    Well scientists say so"   "And how do they know"    "They study science and have not discovered God"     I must say I am always puzzled by this.    My wife sows flower seeds in a garden.   All she knows about why flowers grow is that she plants the seeds, and has expectations rarely disappointed, that a rose will grow.    She has no understanding of photosynthesis, nor how the roots develop, nor why the flowers need sunshine and rain and only grow at one particular time of the year.    Perhaps a scientist will come along one day and give her all this information, but will it help her deny the existence of God?.    And how does it help the scientist to deny the existence of God?    Now let me say that I very much envy scientists and how they have uncovered all the wonders of nature, and explained the laws of nature which they never had a hand in, but really they have done nothing to prove the existence or non existence of God.   They may feel that it is their place to deny God, since they want to be acceptable as intelligent beings to the rest of the world, but that is just vanity,   Their problem is that there is nothing they have discovered that explains its own existence, and as we go back through the evolution of the universe they have accepted that everything began with a 'Big Bang'.   But there they have a real problem, for the question is 'what existed before the Big Bang'.    A humble reply that 'we don not know' would be sufficient.   But no, they ponder and try to get out of the situation.    It is no good them trying to say that something caused the Big Bang, for that something would need an explanation,    And could we have evolution going back to infinity?    Well if we had to wait an infinity of time to exist then there is an obvious absurdity in such evolution, meaning we could never exist.     No with the Big Bang the universe began to exist in time.  So let us examine the problem.    If the Big Bang started matter and time and it cannot be explained in matter and time, then the reason for its existence must be something outside matter and time.   Something unreachable by Scientists, something thousands of people worked out thousands of years ago - a Creator.    This is where thinking of atheists often go wrong.   They jump to the conclusion that I am talking about a Christian God, or a Bhuddist God, or the God of Islam, and I get protests about how cruel these Gods are.    And that is their problem, anti-religion.    No, I have just stated that it is possible a Creator exists, who He is or What He is is for further study.
