FACING UP TO THE ABUSE IN AMERICA.
The scandal of 300 priests being involved in the abuse of OVER 1000 young boys and young seminarians in America does not seem to be rocking the BbC here. In 2002 they could not broadcast enough about it and the press were just as eager.
Perhaps the reason for this lies with the Catholic laity. We were shocked by it all in 2002 and were ashamed to even talk about the subject. We all defended the Church gallantly and tried to carry on as though nothing had happened. But something had happened. We began to look more closely at things.
America has broken first and I suspect Ireland will follow. and in a smaller scale the UK, as the revelations at Ampleforth and Downside have shown. Yet even in the small bit of news like the Americans we are asking "Who knew what?" The appalling efforts to cover up by leading bishops in America , the moving of priests from one parish to another and the sickening revelation that one bishop who was on a Bishops workingParty in 2002 when steps were 'being taken,' actually still carried on with his abuse as usual is unbelievable.
The next fact which is emerging, and is probably causing the Press silence, is that the perpetrators were homosexual pedophiles. Am I being homophobic? No its is just that the perpetrators were people of same sex attraction and yes there are plenty of heterosexual pedophiles, but it was young men and boys who were the victims in acts caused by same sex attraction. So who covered up what? and who was sympathetic to homosexuality?
Perhaps because the battle is moving more into a battle between the laity and the clergy and the accusation made that homosexuality is definitely involved has silenced would be critics It is certainly true that there are homosexuals I am sure working as priests who do not indulge in abuse, but the honest question , to safeguard the young, must be asked "If you have same sex attraction should you join a brotherhood of male priests and mix with males of all ages most of the time?" I think because of what is happening in the Catholic Church even the media is no longer sure of the answer. It could be of course that because they get into the company of so many young boys homosexual pedophiles in particular are drawn to the priesthood.
It is not easy to face up to the questions and conclusions. But one thing is certain, the present bishops involved in the drama have failed the Catholic people completely and should resign or be dismissed.
