A Roman Catholic View on the American Election

It was perhaps the most vile election in modern times.  Both candidates were hell bent on destroying the character of the other that real discussion on policies never surfaced.   False accusations of what the other person stood for were common place.   What divided them for me was my Roman Catholic Faith.  On the one hand there was Hilary Clinton who seemed to think she had the infallibility of the Pope in the world arena when she said "Babies in the womb have no human rights".   She was a backer of free abortion in the Obamacare package but went much further.   She wanted to use her Clinton Foundation to spread free abortion throughout the world.   She was a great supporter of Planned Parenthood and had nothing but praise for the selling of the body parts of the babies, for after all the babies had no human rights.   Her e-mails were not criminal but in the last week the stories that emerged from the ones she claimed did not exist but were found, showed she had made a real mess when the Americans went to Benghazi and she had left them to die.  A father of one of the dead soldiers attacked her on CNN when he should have been attacking Donald Trump in keeping with the politics of CNN.   What proved more damaging was her correspondence on the Catholic Church which she had decided would have to change its teachings on abortion and homosexuality and she organised two 'Catholic Lay Groups' to infiltrate the Church and undermine from within.   Then there was an outburst from Tim Kaine her vice-presidential candidate who although claiming to be a devout Catholic resented the sudden calls from priests not to receive Communion in their parishes.  He threatened to legistlate  against the  Church   teachings on abortion and homosexuality.   Now although Trump was hardly the best candidate for the pro-life cause  he nevertheless saw a chance to win votes and espoused the Catholic cause.   Indeed his campaign manager was Pro-Life.   So what we had was a dilemma.   Could we vote for either candidate as Catholics.   Pro-life in America found that Clinton was so extreme that a vote for Trump would actually save lives and on this basis they supported Trump.
It is sad though that in our Catholic Church there are those who would have voted Clinton even in these circumstances.   Bishops and priests who believe the job of the Church is to advance the material wealth of society.  Who teach the Common Good rather than Gospel of Christ and pay little attention to the sufferings of the 'least of their brethren' in order to be popular in the secular society rather than remain with Christy in his Church and the purpose of His Church which is to love with a spiritual love that the world does not have.  To see everyone as an image of God and that is their motivation rather than the feel good factor.    But many Catholics in the Latino group in America were horrified and refused to vote Clinton.   That is the true story the media will never tell.   IN some way the American election was a move forward for the Church.   Its first victory of abortionists.
