Feast of Mary the Mother of God

Not so long ago I was puzzled by an announcement that the year 2020 was a year in which they would rededicate England as the Dowry of Mary.  'They' of course, were the Bishops of England and Wales.   But I remained positive that perhaps those who had sacrificed devotion to Mary as an unecumenical truth, had actually changed.   I did however have my reservations and plunged into trying to get an organised devotion going in my own parish.   At Masses I gave a talk to say how worried I was about the situation and how it may turn out to be an insult to her since there did not seem to be the same devotion to her as in days of the past.   But I was not talking about personal devotion which in my own parish is beginning to flourish.   My talk was about commitment to Mary as a parish.   It got praise this speech, but I was unable to turn the idea into something concrete.

Now on this feast of the Mother of God,  the bishops were to prepare this year of rededication of England as the Dowry of Mary, but having given little thought to it as usual, they cancelled the whole thing.   That this was an insult to Mary never entered their heads, for they had decided Mary was of no importance.  They are after all ecumenists and it was in that spirit that they decided to have a Year of the Bible instead.   Literature was sent out which seemed to suggest that St Jerome was responsible  for the Canon of the Bible rather than the Synod of Carthage where the Catholic Church decided which of the hundreds of early writings were to be used in the Church.   This Canon they called the Word of God.   And the Word of God was decided by bishops of the Catholic Church and ratified by the Pope.   They have decided that we should get our bibles from the Protestant Bible Society, and the meeting should be in the form of an Alpha course where ordinary catholics are told to talk about it among themselves and they learn very little.  But it is an enjoyable meal.

Turning to the Walsingham website we are now to rededicate ourselves to Mary.  But that takes a teaching Church, and although things are improving it is only slowly and it will take time before the revolutionary priests of the 60's and 70's are replaced by  more mature catholic priests.

Meanwhile let us thank God for the Fathers of the Early Church who protected the truth of the Incarnation, that Mary was Mother of the whole person of Jesus  both God and Man, and in being that Mother was truly the Mother of God.    We also thank the Holy Spirit for revealing to the Apostles and their contemporaries that she, Mary, was the New Eve, the one who was conceived 'full of grace', but unlike the Old Eve, having been born without sin she remained faithful to God in all things.

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
