The fourth article ...Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

And as many as shall, in the exercise of repentance, return into
the unity of the Church, these, too, shall belong to God, that they
may live according to Jesus Christ. Do not err, my brethren. If any
man follows him that makes a schism in the Church, he shall not
inherit the kingdom of God. If any one walks according to a
strange opinion, he agrees not with the passion [of Christ].

The above is a quotation from St Ignatius of Antioch, a contemporary of the Apostles, and indeed his writings could well have been included in the Canon of Scripture.   As we read about the Death and Resurrection of Chirst it is good to keep his words in mind.

What is the fourth article of the Creed.   The Fourth Article of the Creed is suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

Charles Dickens begins his Christmas Carol by saying.  Marly was dead to begin with as dead as a door nail.   He tells us that we have to understand this or none of what he writes afterwards will make sense.   This is also true of Christianity.  Christ died to begin with and without that there can be no Resurrection and as St Paul tells us  "..if Christ be not risen then out Faith is in vain".

Why did Our Saviour suffer?    Our Saviour suffered to atone for our sins and to purchase for us eternal life.

Why is Jesus Christ called Our Redeemer?   Jesus Christ is called Our Redeemer because his precious blood is is the price by which we were ransomed.

Have you noticed how these terms Saviour and Redeemer are rarely mentioned in the Church today.   Indeed it was such phrases in the Catechism that was hated by the Reformers and why they were so anxious to be rid of it.   People had to be stopped dwelling on sin and guilt and going to Confession was to be discouraged.   Jesus is just be be 'someone who loves us' .

Why do we make the sign f the Cross?    We make the sign of the Cross - first to put us in mind of the Blessed Trinity and secondly to remind us that God the Son died for us on the Cross.

I remember and it was not so long ago that I was at a Catholic Meeting and the opinion from a section was that making the Sogn of the Cross was a superstition.   In fact it was St Hyppolitus in the third century who first introduced the practice to his followers and they did this to ward of evil initially. So the Sign of the Cross has been practised for eighteen hundred years.    We can make the sign of the cross when we first wake in the morning and so offering our day to the the Blessed Trinity.   We can make it before meals in thanksgiving for our food, there are so many occasions we can use this practice in thanksgiving to God.  Many sportspeople use it before going into action.   They do no believe that this means that God will give them victory but they are just asking God to help them do their best.  So let me close this post by saying  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
